Reimbursements for podiatry and chiropody care

The costs of podiatry and chiropody treatment can be reimbursed in various ways. This may be through a reimbursement from your supplementary insurance or through a reimbursement for medical foot care under your basic insurance.

Would you like to know what reimbursement applies to your situation? Below, we explain how reimbursement for podiatry and chiropody works.

What does your health insurer cover?

How does the reimbursement work?

  • Reimbursement under the basic insurance scheme is only available if you are eligible for medical foot care. This refers to medically necessary foot care for people at increased risk of foot ulcers, for example due to diabetes, rheumatism or another medical condition.

    The podiatrist will assess whether you are eligible for medical foot care. The podiatrist will also determine which foot care is medically necessary to help prevent foot wounds. Only this care is covered by basic health insurance.

    Medical foot care may consist of treatments provided by a podiatrist, a medical pedicurist or a combination of both. The type of care you receive depends on your personal treatment plan.

    You do not have to pay any excess for medical foot care covered by basic health insurance.

    When basic insurance does not cover the costs

    Are you not eligible for medical foot care? In that case, reimbursement under the basic insurance is not possible.

    In some cases, you may be able to claim reimbursement under your supplementary insurance. You can read more about this below.

    Read more about reimbursement for medical foot care under your basic health insurance.

  • Many supplementary insurance policies offer cover for podiatry, chiropody or both. Which treatments are covered and how much you are reimbursed varies depending on the health insurer and the policy.

    In most cases, you can book an appointment for podiatry without a referral.

    To claim reimbursement for chiropody treatment, your health insurer may ask for a statement or referral from your GP or specialist. You should therefore always check in advance what conditions apply to your insurance policy.

    Amount of your reimbursement

    The amount of the reimbursement varies depending on your health insurer. For example, your health insurer may:

    • reimburse a fixed annual amount;
    • reimburse a certain percentage of the treatment costs;
    • reimburse a maximum number of treatments per year.

    With some health insurers, podiatry and chiropody fall within the same reimbursement budget. Medical aids, such as orthotic insoles, may also be covered by this reimbursement.

    Would you like to know exactly what you are entitled to be reimbursed for? If so, please check your policy terms and conditions or contact your health insurer.

    Excess and personal contribution

    When claiming reimbursement for podiatry and chiropody treatment under your supplementary insurance, it is advisable to bear the following in mind:

    • You do not have to pay any excess for medical foot care covered by basic health insurance;
    • No excess applies to reimbursements under supplementary insurance;
    • If your insurance does not cover all the costs, you will have to pay the remaining amount yourself.
  • If you are not entitled to reimbursement under your basic insurance and your supplementary insurance does not cover the costs, you will have to pay for the treatment yourself.

    Do you receive medical foot care under your basic health insurance? In that case, only those treatments that form part of your treatment plan will be reimbursed. If, in addition to this, you opt for a full foot treatment or other care that is not included in your treatment plan, you will have to pay these costs yourself.

    Is paying in one go difficult? If so, please feel free to contact us. We’d be happy to discuss the options with you.
