What can you expect during your visit to the medical chiropodist?
Is this your first visit to a medical pedicurist? If so, it’s helpful to know in advance how an appointment works and what to expect.
During your first visit, we will assess the condition of your feet and discuss your situation. We will determine what foot care is appropriate and discuss which treatment best suits your situation.
Below you can read about how an initial appointment usually proceeds.

Before your appointment
To ensure we can help you properly, we ask that you come to your appointment well prepared.
Please note the following:
- a valid identity document;
- a current medication overview, where applicable;
- your podiatrist’s treatment plan;
- where applicable: an oncology consent form if you are undergoing treatment that may affect your immune system;
- any information about previous treatments that is relevant to your foot care.
Please also take a look at our code of conduct. In it, you will find the agreements and expectations that apply, so that together we can ensure pleasant and appropriate care.
The first appointment
During your first appointment, we will get to know each other and discuss your situation. We will then assess the condition of your feet and determine what foot care is required.
The appointment usually consists of the following parts:
- the intake interview
- checking your feet
- treatment and treatment plan
- succession
Below you will find details of what to expect for each section.
The intake interview
Your appointment begins with a consultation. The medical pedicurist will ask you questions to gain a clear picture of your health and the condition of your feet.
Among other things, we will discuss:
- your symptoms;
- your medical condition;
- any treatments or medication;
- whether you can look after your feet yourself;
- your daily activities;
- any previous foot care.
Checking your feet
After the consultation, the medical chiropodist will examine your feet. We will check, amongst other things, the condition of your skin and nails and look out for any changes that require extra attention.
Depending on your situation, we may, for example, check:
- calluses, corns and cracked heels;
- ingrown or thickened nails;
- pressure sores;
- changes to the skin;
- high-risk areas that can lead to foot ulcers.
Where necessary, the medical pedicurist will consult with your podiatrist.
Treatment and treatment plan
After the check-up, we will discuss our findings with you. Together, we will discuss which foot care best suits your situation.
Depending on your symptoms or healthcare needs, treatment may consist of:
- the treatment of calluses and corns;
- nail care;
- the reduction of pressure sores;
- the fitting of protective equipment;
- advice on foot care and suitable footwear.
Are you receiving medical foot care? If so, the medical pedicurist will carry out the treatments in accordance with the treatment plan drawn up by your podiatrist.
Follow-up
After the treatment, we will discuss whether a follow-up appointment is necessary and how you can look after your feet as well as possible at home.
During or after the first appointment, it may become apparent that no medical or complex foot care is required. In that case, we will refer you to a regular chiropodist for further foot care.
Sometimes, regular check-ups are important. For example, if you have diabetes or rheumatism, are at increased risk of foot ulcers, or are undergoing treatment that makes your feet particularly vulnerable. Where necessary, the medical pedicurist will coordinate with the podiatrist or another healthcare provider from Rondom, such as a occupational therapist or physiotherapist.
Costs and reimbursement
The reimbursement for chiropody care depends on your circumstances and your health insurance.
Do you receive medical foot care covered by your basic health insurance? If so, the treatments that form part of your podiatrist’s treatment plan will be fully reimbursed.
In other situations, you may be eligible for reimbursement under your supplementary insurance. You should therefore always check your policy terms and conditions or contact your health insurer.
