Occupational therapy for chronic conditions

Living with a chronic condition often means that everyday activities no longer come naturally. Symptoms can vary from day to day, and activities that previously required little effort may sometimes demand more energy, preparation or recovery time.

You may find that you are able to do less in a day or that you have to make choices about your activities. You may find it difficult to work, household, social contacts and to maintain a balance between work and relaxation. Unpredictable levels of stress or prolonged fatigue can also affect how you organise your day.

Occupational therapy helps you organise your daily activities so that they remain in line with your abilities and what is important to you. In doing so, we focus not only on what you are unable to do, but also on ways to sustain your activities and use your energy wisely.

Occupational therapy for chronic conditions
  • What do we offer?

    Occupational therapy for chronic conditions focuses on maintaining independence and quality of life in day-to-day functioning.

    During an initial assessment, for example, we look at:

    • which activities are important to you and how much energy they require;
    • how workload and capacity are distributed throughout the day;
    • signs of overexertion and recovery;
    • the impact of symptoms on home life, work and leisure time;
    • ways of planning, organising or carrying out activities differently.

    Depending on your situation, the support we offer may consist of advice, energy management, practising skills, coaching, assistive devices or practical adjustments that fit in with your daily life.

  • Who is this offer intended for?

    Occupational therapy for chronic conditions may be appropriate if you:

    • notices that everyday activities take more energy;
    • finds it difficult to keep up with activities;
    • needs to recover more often after exercise;
    • is seeking a better balance between being active and taking time to rest;
    • if you would like support in dealing with lasting changes;
    • wish to continue carrying out activities despite experiencing symptoms;
    • want to be less dependent on others;
    • want to gain more control over your day-to-day functioning.

    This offer may, for example, be suitable for chronic conditions such as rheumatic conditions, lung conditions, cardiovascular diseases, chronic pain, long-term fatigue or other conditions that affect daily life.

  • What can you expect?

    An appointment with the occupational therapist begins with a discussion about your daily life, what is important to you and how your condition affects your activities. Together, we will explore where you want to focus your energy and where adjustments might help.

    Depending on your situation, we’ll identify which activities are stressful, which give you energy, and how you can better tailor your day to what you can cope with. In doing so, we’ll also look at your habits, expectations and the influence of your environment.

    In any case, you can count on:

    • practical advice tailored to your everyday life;
    • support with managing energy and making choices;
    • attention to independence and self-determination;
    • support aimed at enabling people to continue their activities;
    • collaboration with other healthcare providers at Rondom where this adds value.

  • Collaboration with other healthcare providers

    With chronic conditions, several factors often play a role simultaneously. Symptoms, energy levels, recovery, lifestyle and daily activities are all interrelated. That is why our occupational therapists work alongside other healthcare professionals at Rondom where necessary.

    Depending on your situation, this could, for example, be a physiotherapist, lifestyle coach, psychologist, podiatrist or another practitioner. Together, we will look at how support can be coordinated so that you can continue to carry out your activities as effectively as possible and focus your energy on what matters most to you.

    Occupational therapy for chronic conditions
  • Costs and reimbursement

    Occupational therapy is covered by basic health insurance. You are entitled to 10 hours of occupational therapy per calendar year. Do you have supplementary insurance? If so, you may be entitled to additional treatment hours on top of these 10 hours. This varies depending on your health insurer and policy. You should therefore always read your policy terms and conditions carefully or contact your health insurer. That way, you’ll know exactly how many treatment sessions are covered for you.
