Ledderhose’s disease

Ledderhose’s disease is a benign condition and falls under the category of ‘soft tissue rheumatism’. It is a painless atrophy of the connective tissue of a tendon plate on the sole of the foot. It can be recognised by the small lumps under the foot. As this is located on the sole of the foot, it can cause pain when standing or walking.

What is Ledderhose disease?

Ledderhose’s disease, also known as Morbus Ledderhose, is a foot condition in which bumps or lumps develop on the sole of the foot. Sometimes there are several thickened areas, but usually only one is visible. The thickened areas are caused by benign ‘proliferation’ and are harmless in nature. Ledderhose’s disease usually causes no symptoms, but sometimes pain may be experienced whilst walking.

Causes of Ledderhose disease

The cause of the condition is unknown; however, it is known that Ledderhose’s disease is hereditary and is most commonly seen in middle-aged people or older, and is often more common in men than in women.

Symptoms of Ledderhose disease

Ledderhose’s disease can, in principle, progress entirely without symptoms. The formation of lumps under the foot is normally painless, but can cause the tendon in the arch of the foot to function less effectively. As a result, the tendon may shorten and an abnormal position of the foot may develop. This may then cause pain. Even if the lumps are large, this can cause discomfort when standing or walking and result in a lack of space in shoes. Usually, the lumps associated with Ledderhose’s disease do not disappear on their own.

What can a podiatrist do?

If you suffer from Ledderhose disease, it is important that you wear suitable footwear with a sturdy outsole. If you experience pain, it is a good idea to visit one of our podiatrists. The podiatrist can podiatry insoles tailored for you with a cut-out at the site of the lump, in order to reduce the strain on the tendon fibres. This ensures that the pulling forces and pressure under the sole of the foot are better distributed.
