Sand toe or volleyball toe

This refers to pain caused by falling over the toe; the big toe, as it were, flips downwards.

How does the pain develop?

This refers to pain following a fall onto the toe, with the big toe, as it were, snapping downwards. Pain in the big toe joint (usually MTP-1) often occurs following the injury, possibly accompanied by swelling and bruising.

A treatment

Immediately after the injury, the area must be cooled using ice packs. In addition, the podiatrist may apply tape to stabilise the big toe joint; the other toes are often splinted as well. If necessary, pressure-relieving podiatric insoles can be made. After the acute phase, muscle-strengthening exercises are prescribed.

The expected outcome is to be symptom-free.
