Athlete’s foot

You may notice that the skin between your toes is itchy, becoming red or starting to flake. Sometimes small cracks appear or the skin feels soft. It can also be troublesome if your feet start to smell differently or if the symptoms keep coming back.

Athlete’s foot
What is it?

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin on the foot. The fungus thrives particularly well in warm and damp places, such as between the toes.

The fungal infection can spread to other parts of the foot. Without treatment, the symptoms may persist or recur.

Causes

Was this information helpful?

Athlete’s foot is caused by contact with fungi. Warm and damp conditions in particular increase the risk of infection.

Other factors can also contribute to the development of athlete’s foot, such as:

  • sweaty feet;
  • closed-toe shoes;
  • walking barefoot in public spaces;
  • not drying their feet properly;
  • wearing damp socks or shoes for a long time.
What do you notice?

If you have athlete’s foot, you may notice that:

  • the skin becomes red or flaky;
  • your skin is itchy;
  • the skin feels soft (supple) between the toes;
  • small tears form in the skin;
  • feet sometimes smell unpleasant.
The impact of a healthy lifestyle and your mental health

A healthy lifestyle helps the body to better resist fungal infections and supports skin recovery. A healthy diet, sufficient sleep and plenty of rest help the immune system to function properly.

When symptoms persist for a long time or keep coming back, this can be a nuisance in everyday life. Our lifestyle coaches can help with healthy habits that contribute to a strong immune system and recovery.

What can you do yourself?

There is a lot you can do yourself to reduce athlete’s foot and prevent new symptoms from developing.

To reduce symptoms, you can:

  • dry your feet thoroughly, including between the toes;
  • wearing clean socks every day;
  • air your shoes regularly;
  • wearing flip-flops in public showers or swimming pools;
  • wear shoes that provide adequate ventilation;
  • Do not walk around in damp socks or shoes for too long.
Advice and treatment

Our pedicures can assess whether someone has athlete’s foot. They also provide advice on foot care and foot hygiene.

Treatment may consist of:

  • advice on foot care;
  • advice on shoes and socks;
  • treatment of affected skin;
  • advice on antifungal treatments;
  • guidance to prevent new symptoms.

If an antifungal cream is not working well enough despite following the advice, it is advisable to contact your GP. Your GP can assess whether other antifungal medication is required.
