Reduced mobility of the big toe joint

This is also known as hallux limitus/rigidus. Hallux limitus/hallux rigidus is diagnosed when there is limited mobility of the big toe or stiffness in the big toe. This is often the result of trauma or osteoarthritis. If you experience pain in the big toe joint, it is advisable to see a podiatrist. However, pain may also occur elsewhere in the feet and/or the knee, hip or back.

The treatment consists of a corrective podiatric insole designed to optimise the function of the big toe joint and the foot’s gait pattern whilst walking, including correction of the rearfoot. In cases of reduced movement in the big toe joint, the focus is primarily on mobilisation; where no movement is possible in the big toe joint, the focus is primarily on immobilisation. A (silicone) orthosis under the big toe can help provide additional guidance. In addition, advice on footwear can be given and, if necessary, shoes can be modified.

The expected outcome is good, but a permanent adjustment is required. If the result is unsatisfactory, an orthopaedic shoe technician or shoemaker can fit a roll-off bar under the shoe, preferably only if there is no longer any movement possible in the big toe joint.
