Valgus deformity

The inward tilting of the heel bone, combined with a change in the position of the foot and leg, can cause painful symptoms.

What is it?

Valgus alignment refers to the inward tilting of the heel bone (calcaneus). The position of the foot is often determined by the characteristics of the bones, muscles and ligaments and is therefore frequently genetically determined. However, it can sometimes also be caused by weak foot muscles. If the heel bone tilts inwards too far, this can cause many problems in the foot, such as increased strain on the muscles on the inside or underside of the foot. This disrupts the gait pattern, which in turn can lead to symptoms further up the body, for example in the knee or hip.

Symptoms often vary, frequently localised on the inside of the foot, ankle or knee. Sometimes, however, they occur on the outside due to pressure. The symptoms often arise after prolonged walking or exercise.

A treatment

Foot problems can be corrected with orthotic insoles. Advice on footwear is often important in this regard. Sometimes exercises may also be recommended.

The expected outcome is ‘good’ to ‘symptom-free’. The improvement in posture achieved is usually not permanent once the orthotic insoles are no longer worn (in children, complete correction is sometimes possible, depending on the cause).
