Sports podiatry assessment

Do you exercise regularly and experience any discomfort whilst exercising? Or would you like to prevent injuries? If so, a sports podiatry assessment could help.

During this assessment, the podiatrist will look beyond your specific complaint. We will examine your whole body, your sporting movements and the strain placed on your body whilst exercising.

This will give the sports podiatrist a clear picture of the cause of your symptoms, and of what you need to continue exercising comfortably and safely.

A sports podiatry assessment often consists of:

  • A personal consultation (medical history);
  • Physical examination (functional examination);
  • Analysis of your gait and sporting movements;
  • A pressure measurement of the feet;
  • Review of the trainers
  • Discussing the diagnosis;
  • Drawing up a personal treatment plan.

Below, we explain each section to you in more detail, step by step.

Our sports podiatrists look at the bigger picture. So we don’t just focus on your current injury. This is how we treat your condition, whilst also helping to prevent new or recurring injuries. This is in line with our vision of early detection, sustainable recovery and continuing to enjoy sport and everyday life.

Sports Podiatry Assessment: Foot Rondom
What is a sports podiatrist?

Every podiatrist is trained to support athletes. In addition, our sports podiatrists have further specialised in sports injuries and sporting performance.

We always book you in with the podiatrist who best suits your sport and level. Do you play sport at a high recreational level or at a top-level competitive level? If so, we will book you in with one of our sports podiatrists.

Face-to-face consultation (medical history)

Was this information helpful?

The sports podiatrist begins with a personal consultation. You will discuss the following with the sports podiatrist:

  • What symptoms you are experiencing;
  • When the symptoms first appeared;
  • During which sporting activities do you experience symptoms;
  • Whatever your level of fitness and training workload.

We’ll also look together at your training sessions, competitions, recovery periods and daily workload. This helps the sports podiatrist gain a clear picture of the possible cause of your complaint or injury.

Physical examination (functional examination)

The interview is followed by a physical examination. During this examination, the sports podiatrist will examine your feet, ankles, knees, legs, hips and back. We will also assess how well your joints move and how stable they are.

Depending on your symptoms, we may carry out additional tests, for example:

  • Muscle tests
  • Targeted movement tests
  • Ultrasound examination

Based on these tests, the sports podiatrist can better assess muscles, tendons and joints.

Analysis of your running gait and sporting movements

An important part of the sports podiatry assessment is analysing your gait and sporting movements. Examples of sporting movements include: running, jumping, turning or pushing off.

Every sport involves different movements. Consequently, every sport places a different strain on the body. That is why the sports podiatrist does not just look at how you walk, but also at how you move whilst playing your sport.

By also analysing your sporting movements, the sports podiatrist can identify overuse and abnormal movements in good time.

Foot pressure measurement

If necessary, the sports podiatrist will carry out a pressure assessment. We do this using a special pressure measurement plate. This allows us to see exactly how the pressure is distributed under your feet whilst standing, walking and during sporting movements.

A pressure measurement helps the sports podiatrist identify where excessive strain occurs during exercise. It also helps to determine the possible cause of your symptoms or injury. The pressure measurement therefore helps to assess which movements, stresses or sporting activities place extra pressure on your feet.

If the pressure measurement indicates that it is necessary, the sports podiatrist may choose to perform a ultrasound examination to do.

Review of the trainers

The sports podiatrist will then assess your sports shoes. We’ll check whether your shoes are suitable for your feet, your sport and the way you move.

In this regard, we pay particular attention to:

  • Fit
  • Support
  • Demping
  • Any wear and tear

The sports podiatrist will also check whether your shoes are suitable for the demands of your sport. In addition, we can advise you on new sports shoes, sports socks and how to tie your laces.

The diagnosis

After the examination, the sports podiatrist will discuss the findings with you. We will explain the likely causes of your symptoms and what the problem is.

In doing so, we look not only at your current complaint or injury, but also at how we can help prevent new complaints or recurring injuries.

The treatment plan

Following the assessment, the sports podiatrist will draw up a personalised treatment plan together with you. The treatment plan is always tailored to your sport, goals and level of performance. Where necessary, we work in collaboration with other sports healthcare professionals, such as: sports doctors, physiotherapists and manual therapists,

Possible components of the treatment include:

  • Podiatric sports insoles
  • Practice advice
  • Medical taping or sports tape
  • Footwear advice or footwear modification
  • Advice on tax and accrual
  • Orthoses
  • Dry needling
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Manual techniques
Who is it for?

A sports podiatrist treats athletes of all levels. Whether you are a beginner, a recreational athlete or a top-level athlete, we are here to help.

You can make an appointment even if you have no symptoms. For example, if you want to prevent injuries or improve your sporting performance.

Follow-up appointment

We believe it is important that your treatment achieves the desired result. That is why we usually schedule a follow-up appointment after about 6 weeks.

During the follow-up appointment, the sports podiatrist will discuss with you how you are getting on and whether the treatment is helping. If necessary, we will adjust the treatment.
