Podiatric assessment in children

Children’s feet are still developing. As they grow, the position of their feet often changes. What may look unusual at a young age can therefore sometimes simply be part of a normal stage of development.

Nevertheless, it is important for a child to be able to move, play and take part in sport freely, without pain or limitations. Problems can arise due to the position of the feet, the gait or changes associated with growth.

During the podiatric assessment, we therefore look not only at the feet, but also at how your child stands and moves. In this way, we assess whether the foot position or gait is appropriate for your child’s age and development, or whether additional guidance or treatment is required.

A podiatric assessment for children often consists of:

  • A personal consultation (medical history);
  • Physical examination (functional examination);
  • Analysis of the gait pattern;
  • Review of the shoes;
  • Discussing the diagnosis;
  • Drawing up a treatment plan.

Below, we explain each section to you in more detail, step by step.

Podiatric assessment in children
Face-to-face consultation (medical history)

The paediatric podiatrist begins with a personal consultation with you and your child.

During this meeting, we will discuss:

  • What symptoms are present;
  • When the symptoms first appeared;
  • In which situations your child has symptoms;
  • How your child’s development has progressed;
  • Whether there have been any previous complaints or treatments.

The focus here is on the support needs of both you as a parent and your child.

Physical examination (functional examination)

Was this information helpful?

The interview is followed by a physical examination. During this examination, the podiatrist assesses the alignment of the feet, ankles, legs, knees, hips and back.

We assess whether there is an abnormal position of the feet or an unusual way of moving. We also examine how well the joints move. The podiatrist then carries out a few physical tests.

Based on the physical examination, the paediatric podiatrist will gain a clear understanding of where your child’s symptoms might be coming from.

Analysis of gait patterns

An important part of the podiatric assessment for children is examining your child’s gait. The podiatrist observes how your child walks and how their feet roll as they walk. We also assess the strain placed on the joints, muscles and tendons whilst walking.

By also observing your child’s gait, the paediatric podiatrist can identify abnormal movements or strain in your child at an early stage.

Review of the shoes

Your child’s shoes will also be checked by the paediatric podiatrist. They will check whether:

  • The fit of the shoe suits your child’s feet well;
  • The shoes provide sufficient support;
  • The shoes provide enough room for growth and development.

In addition, we provide advice on suitable children’s shoes where necessary.

The diagnosis

After the examination, we will discuss the findings with you and your child. We will explain the likely causes of the symptoms and what is going on.

In doing so, we look not only at the current complaint, but also at how we can help prevent future complaints.

The treatment plan

The paediatric podiatrist will work with you to draw up a treatment plan that is tailored to your child’s situation and development.

Possible components of the treatment include:

  • Podiatric insoles
  • Orthoses
  • Medical taping
  • Shoe advice
  • Practice advice

Where necessary, we work together with other healthcare professionals, such as a paediatric physiotherapist or paediatrician.

Follow-up appointment

As children’s feet continue to grow and change, regular check-ups are particularly important.

During follow-up appointments, the paediatric podiatrist will work with you and your child to assess how things are going and whether the treatment is helping. If necessary, we will adjust the treatment.
