Sudden inflammation of the big toe joint

This is also known as: gout. Gout is a rheumatic condition in which uric acid crystals deposit in the joints. This is caused by a metabolic disorder in the body, leading to a build-up of uric acid. An initial attack often progresses to chronic gout. Gout commonly affects the big toe, but in rare cases it can also affect other joints in the foot.

A podiatrist is referred to when the body does not respond to medication, in cases of persistent pain in the big toe joint, or pain caused by the pressure of the shoe on the bony protrusion.

If there is pain in the big toe joint, an investigation is carried out to determine the cause of the persistent symptoms. A corrective podiatric insole will then be fitted. If there is a painful bony protrusion, a protective orthosis will be made or the shoe will be modified. In addition, advice on footwear will be provided and, where relevant, attention may be drawn to any advice on alcohol consumption and diet given by the GP and/or dietitian.

The expected outcome is positive in terms of pain symptoms. Usually, the corrective podiatric insoles provide a lasting solution, as does the follow-up check-up. Please note that this does not treat the gout itself!
