Pain between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals / numb toes

This is also known as Morton’s neuralgia. Morton’s neuralgia is a nerve bundle that is pinched between the third and fourth metatarsal bones. It is often caused by unsuitable footwear or an incorrect gait.

If you are experiencing severe pain radiating into the toes and/or a numb sensation in the toes, you can book an appointment with a podiatrist. They will assess how the cause can be addressed. In many cases, the foot’s alignment will need to be corrected. Taping, silicone orthoses and/or corrective podiatric insoles are then used. Advice on footwear will also be provided.

The expected outcome is a reasonable to good reduction in symptoms; depending on the cause and the extent of tissue damage, the healing process is slow. The podiatric insole and/or orthosis often needs to be worn permanently.
