Research into Achilles tendon problems

In collaboration with researchers from the University of Amsterdam and the Ministry of Defence, we are conducting research into risk factors for Achilles tendon problems. This concerns symptoms in the middle section of the Achilles tendon. In scientific terms, this is also known as mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy.

Through research into Achilles tendon problems, we aim to gain a better understanding of how these conditions arise. This will enable us to make a greater contribution to preventing this condition in the future.

Reason

Achilles tendon problems are common among people who are physically active. This includes athletes, but also people in physically demanding jobs, such as soldiers. On average, there are 2 to 3 cases per 1,000 patients.

Problems with the Achilles tendon can cause pain and make it difficult to walk or play sport. This pain can affect work, sport and daily life. Sometimes these problems lead to long-term absence from work.

Preventing complaints

We believe it is important not only to treat symptoms, but also to understand what causes them. If we know which factors increase the risk of symptoms, we can provide better advice. We can also often recognise symptoms at an earlier stage. By investigating the causes of Achilles tendon problems, we help to maintain mobility and employability.

Aim of the study

The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of the risk factors for Achilles tendon problems in the middle section of the tendon. We want to find out which characteristics or circumstances increase the likelihood of these symptoms.

By gaining a better understanding of this, we can develop targeted preventive measures in the future. This can help reduce the risk of health problems, both among athletes and military personnel.

Type of research

We are carrying out a systematic literature review. This means that we are carefully collecting and analysing existing scientific studies.

We are investigating which risk factors for developing Achilles tendon problems are mentioned in the literature. We are also examining whether certain factors have a different effect on runners than on military personnel. This will give us as complete a picture as possible.
