MalleoCap: the device for the prevention of pressure sores on the ankles

The MalleoCap is a bespoke device designed to speed up wound healing or, conversely, to prevent wounds on the ankle. It reduces pressure on the ankles. The MalleoCap was developed by RondOm Podiatrists.

Pressure ulcer on the ankle or foot

In the case of a pressure ulcer, also known as decubitus, there are often several factors at play, such as the skin’s moisture balance and nutritional status, physical activity, mobility, pressure and/or friction.

A patient who has developed a pressure ulcer may sometimes require complex (long-term) treatment. A wound can take up to 6 months to heal. Even if a patient has two or more other conditions, they are at risk of this pressure ulcer requiring ongoing care and treatment. Furthermore, the risk of death is four times higher when a pressure ulcer is present.

MalleoCap by RondOm Podiatrists

In practice, pressure ulcers on the ankles are frequently seen. For example, if there is constant pressure on the wound on the outside of the ankle whilst in bed, it will be difficult for the wound to heal. To address this, the podiatrists at RondOm have developed the MalleoCap. This reduces the pressure on the ankles. This is a bespoke aid designed to speed up wound healing or, conversely, to prevent wounds on the ankle.

Why use a pressure ulcer aid?

The MalleoCap is a custom-made foot and ankle support that ensures optimal pressure distribution and prevents wound healing from being impeded by excessive pressure. The soft material on the inside prevents new pressure sores and/or wounds. The MalleoCap has a Velcro fastening to prevent it from slipping during use.

Uses of Malleocap

The MalleoCap can be used to prevent wounds on the ankle (preventative), but also during the healing process of an existing wound (curative). The MalleoCap fits loosely around the ankles, so that dressing material can be applied underneath it at any time.

  • In the case of a wound, the wound dressing is first applied to the ankle, after which the MalleoCap can be fitted.
  • To provide extra protection for the skin, the MalleoCap is worn over a sock.
Prevention of pressure sores on the ankles

When there is no wound present, but there is a high risk of a wound developing on the ankle, the MalleoCap is fitted. This reduces pressure and friction on the ankle. It is usually used whilst lying in bed. However, the MalleoCap is also used when the ankle is continuously resting on a bench or cushion.
