Small lump in the tendon plate

What is it?
Ledderhose’s disease is a benign condition and falls under the category of ‘soft tissue rheumatism’. It is a painless atrophy of the connective tissue of a tendon plate on the sole of the foot. It can be recognised by the small lumps under the foot. As this is located on the sole of the foot, it can cause pain when standing or walking.
Ledderhose’s disease can, in principle, progress entirely without symptoms. The lump formation under the foot is normally painless. However, if the foot is in an abnormal position, the tendon plate containing the connective tissue nodules may become overloaded.
A treatment
Surgery is not always chosen as a treatment method, as the atrophy may recur. If pain occurs whilst walking, the podiatrist can make a podiatric insole to reduce the strain on the tendon fibres, with a cut-out at the site of the connective tissue nodule; this helps to distribute the tensile forces and pressure beneath the sole of the foot more evenly.
