Haglund’s exostosis (bump on the back of the heel bone)

Haglund’s exostosis is a bony protrusion or lump at the back of the heel bone. This protrusion is caused by external pressure and causes pain in the heel.

Symptoms of Haglund’s exostosis
  • A painful, hard swelling on the heel;
  • Red discolouration of the heel;
  • Painful and thickened Achilles tendon;
  • Pressure on the exostosis exacerbates the symptoms;
  • The symptoms worsen when wearing ill-fitting shoes;
  • The symptoms are alleviated when walking barefoot or in flip-flops.
Cause of a lump on the back of the heel bone

Haglund’s exostosis is often caused by excessive pressure on the heel due to wearing unsuitable shoes. The point at the back of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches can sometimes thicken due to increased tension on the Achilles tendon. To prevent the Achilles tendon from tearing due to this tension and to strengthen the attachment point, the body produces extra bone. This is known as a Haglund’s exostosis.

Treatment of Haglund’s exostosis by RondOm Podiatrists

The treatment will consist of pressure relief by fitting a felt bandage or shoe modification. To alleviate the increased tensile stress, corrective podiatric insoles be carried out. The expected outcome is reasonable to good; if the result is unsatisfactory, surgery may be necessary.
