Calluses

Calluses are a thickening of the skin. A little callus is normal and protects the skin and the foot. However, too much callus can cause pain, feel like a burning sensation or start to crack.

Calluses often occur under the forefoot and under the heel. But they can also appear on the side of the foot or on the toes. If calluses keep coming back, this is often due to excessive pressure on the same spot.

calluses
What is it?

Calluses are a thickened, keratinised layer of skin. The skin forms calluses in response to pressure or friction.

Calluses are not dangerous. However, they can cause discomfort if the callus layer becomes too thick. This can lead to cracks forming. A corn may also develop within the callus, causing discomfort.

Causes

Was this information helpful?

Calluses are usually caused by too much pressure or friction on the skin.

Possible causes of excessive pressure or friction include:

  • a lot of walking or standing for long periods;
  • pressure from shoes;
  • an abnormal foot position;
  • pressure under the forefoot or heel;
  • a thinner pad of fat under the foot;
  • dry skin.
What do you notice?

Calluses do not necessarily cause any symptoms. If the calluses become thicker, walking may become less comfortable.

You may notice that:

  • the skin becomes hard or yellowish;
  • you have a burning sensation on the sole of your foot;
  • the area is painful when pressed;
  • gaps are emerging;
  • You get corns in the calluses;
  • the shoes are less comfortable.
The impact of a healthy lifestyle and your mental health

Good foot care, sufficient exercise and suitable footwear help to reduce pressure on the feet. A good balance between physical activity and recovery is also important for minimising the formation of calluses.

When there is prolonged pressure on a single area, calluses can thicken and cause discomfort. This may cause you to walk differently, which in turn can lead to other problems. A healthy body weight can help to reduce the pressure on your feet.

Our lifestyle coaches to help with healthy habits and a lifestyle that contributes to healthy feet and reduces strain during exercise and daily activities.

What can you do yourself?

You cannot always prevent calluses, but you can look after your skin properly.

You can:

  • wear well-fitting shoes;
  • check your feet regularly;
  • apply a nourishing cream to your feet every day;
  • Do not remove the calluses yourself;
  • Avoid pressure points in shoes.
Advice and treatment

Our podiatrists investigate why the calluses form. We look at the pressure distribution under the foot and at your shoes. Our pedicures can look after your feet regularly if necessary.

Treatment may consist of:

  • the removal of calluses;
  • podiatry insoles to distribute pressure;
  • a toe orthosis for pressure caused by toe deformity;
  • shoe advice;
  • temporary pressure relief;
  • collaboration with a medical pedicure.

In the case of recurring calluses, it is important not only to remove the calluses, but also to address the cause of their formation.

Shoe tips

Good shoes help to reduce pressure and friction on the foot. When buying new shoes, bear the following in mind:

  • Always try on both shoes;
  • Check that there are no stiff seams or stitching in the shoe;
  • Choose the correct length and width of the shoe;
  • Choose a sturdy sole to reduce the pressure under the foot.

For calluses, ensuring an even distribution of pressure across the whole foot helps.
