Ultrasound examination

Ultrasound (Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSU)) is a supplementary examination that we can use during the podiatry assessment. Ultrasound allows us to examine the inside of your foot and ankle. This provides the podiatrist with additional information about your condition.

Rondom Ultrasound Examination
What is an ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan is a procedure in which we use sound waves to visualise structures in your foot and ankle. An ultrasound scan is similar to the scan carried out during pregnancy. The procedure is painless.

Using ultrasound, the podiatrist can examine muscles, tendons, joints, nerves and ligaments. The podiatrist therefore uses ultrasound to examine the inside of your foot. This enables the podiatrist to better determine the cause of your symptoms.

Ultrasound during a podiatry examination

Was this information helpful?

Sometimes the podiatrist chooses to carry out an ultrasound scan during the podiatric examination.

If an ultrasound scan is used during the podiatry examination, the images are visible immediately. This provides the podiatrist with additional information about your condition straight away. Ultrasound therefore helps to:

  • To get a better idea of what’s going on;
  • To gain a clearer understanding of the cause of your symptoms;
  • To monitor the progress of your recovery.

With an ultrasound scan, we can examine the following, amongst other things:

  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Joints
  • Ligaments
  • Bursae
  • Nerves
  • Bone contours
  • Inflammation or irritation
  • Infections
When is an ultrasound scan used?

The podiatrist will carry out an ultrasound scan if this is necessary to assess your condition more effectively.

Sometimes the podiatrist will recommend an ultrasound scan. It may also be that your GP or specialist has referred you for an ultrasound scan. You can also ask for more information about your symptoms yourself.

An ultrasound scan can usually be booked at short notice.

Costs

The costs of an examination or treatment may vary. Reimbursements also depend on your health insurer and your insurance policy. You will therefore find an overview of the rates and general information about reimbursements on our website. This allows you to find out more in advance. For further information, please visit this page.

Specially trained podiatrist

Not every podiatrist is authorised to carry out an ultrasound scan on you. Additional training is required to perform an ultrasound scan.

The podiatrists at Rondom who carry out ultrasound examinations have completed this training. They hold the title ‘Advanced practitioner MSU’.

What happens next?

The podiatrist will discuss the results of the ultrasound scan with you. We will explain what we can see and what this means for your symptoms. We use this information to confirm or refine the diagnosis.

We will then discuss together which treatment is best suited to you.
