Springscheen (shin splints)

It often occurs in running sports where the foot rolls in too much (overpronation). This can be caused by unsuitable footwear, incorrect foot position or an incorrect gait pattern. During the running research We are investigating this.

Shin pain

The main symptom is pain, which is usually felt on the inner side of the lower half of the shin. The pain may also be felt lower down, as far as the inner ankle, or higher up, even as far as the knee.

Pain in the shin

The pain is sharp in nature, and is described as ‘stabbing’. In the case of more severe symptoms, it is described as ‘blows with a stick’. In such cases, the runner has clearly carried on running for too long despite the symptoms. The pain is felt on landing and sometimes also when pushing off. It can sometimes be felt when squatting. Touch causes a great deal of pain, for example when crossing the legs. The pain may become more severe at a slower running pace. Furthermore, a slower running pace leads to more symptoms. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, running may be continued. Often, however, the pain is too severe for this. Despite a period of rest, the symptoms usually return if no additional treatment is provided. In rare cases, there may be slight superficial swelling at the site of the pain, and the runner may feel a ‘string-like’ sensation.

Treatment for painful shin

Our podiatrist takes all aspects of the problem into account. Not only are everyday activities discussed, but also, certainly, sport-specific aspects. Due to the multifaceted nature of the problem, various therapies are possible, such as sports insoles, shoe advice, temporary relief (sole) in combination with physiotherapy, walking advice, etc.

Gait Analysis by RondOm Podiatrists

In addition, athletes can also gait analysis do, giving them greater insight into their running pattern. During this research, scientifically substantiated insights are gathered regarding weaknesses and areas prone to injury. These insights enable athletes to train in a more targeted way so that they can run better, faster and injury-free.
