Occupational therapy for dementia
A diagnosis of dementia often brings about changes in daily life. Things that used to come naturally may now require more effort or unfold differently from what you are used to. This can cause uncertainty, both for you and for your partner, family or other loved ones.
You may find that it is becoming more difficult to keep track of things, remember appointments or carry out daily activities. Cooking, administrative tasks, personal care or multitasking may also require more energy and attention.
Occupational therapy helps people to shape their daily lives independently and enjoyably for as long as possible. In doing so, we look not only at what is becoming more difficult, but above all at what is still going well and how we can build on that.

What do we offer?
Occupational therapy for people with dementia focuses on maintaining independence, safety and quality of life in everyday functioning for as long as possible.
During an initial assessment, for example, we look at:
- which daily activities go smoothly and which require more effort;
- how structure and clarity can be maintained;
- which aids or memory aids can provide support;
- what is important for you to continue doing.
Depending on your situation, our support may include advice on daily routines, memory support, practical home adaptations, advice on assistive devices, support for carers, or solutions tailored to your daily life.
Who is this offer aimed at?
Occupational therapy for dementia may be appropriate if you:
- notices that everyday activities are becoming less effortless;
- has difficulty planning, remembering or organising;
- want to continue living independently at home for longer;
- provides support whilst maintaining structure and clarity;
- wish to investigate which aids can provide support;
- if, as a family member or carer, you are looking for practical guidance;
- work together to see how daily life can continue to run as smoothly as possible.
What can you expect?
An appointment with the occupational therapist begins with a discussion about your daily life, your wishes and the activities that are important to you. In doing so, we look not only at the limitations you experience, but also, and just as importantly, at what you would like to continue doing.
Together, we identify where challenges arise and which solutions can help address them. This may involve looking at routines, reminders, safety in the home, aids or ways to make activities simpler or more organised.
In any case, you can count on:
- practical advice tailored to your everyday situation;
- a focus on independence, safety and quality of life;
- support with structure, memory and organisation;
- practical solutions that can be applied in practice;
- support for relatives and informal carers where this adds value.

Collaboration with other healthcare providers
Dementia often affects not only the person who receives the diagnosis, but also those around them. That is why our occupational therapists focus not only on the person with dementia, but also on their environment and the people who provide daily support.
Where necessary, we work together with other healthcare professionals from Rondom. For example, a physiotherapist, lifestyle coach, psychologist or other practitioner. This creates a level of support that fits in with the daily lives of both the person with dementia and their loved ones.

Costs and reimbursement
Occupational therapy is covered by basic health insurance. You are entitled to 10 hours of occupational therapy per calendar year. Do you have supplementary insurance? If so, you may be entitled to additional treatment hours on top of these 10 hours. This varies depending on your health insurer and policy. You should therefore always read your policy terms and conditions carefully or contact your health insurer. This way, you’ll know exactly how many treatment sessions are covered for you.
