Struggling with change

Do you find that change quickly throws you off balance? Perhaps you find it difficult when appointments don’t go to plan, your health changes or your day doesn’t go as planned. Some people can adapt easily. For others, change takes a lot of energy and causes a great deal of stress.

It is not unusual to find change difficult. Change requires adaptation, perspective and trust. If you are already tired, in pain or experiencing a lot of stress, even a small change can feel like a big one. This can affect your work, home life, studies and social activities.

Struggling with change
What do you notice?

Difficulty with change can manifest itself in thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you feel unsettled when plans change;
  • you think a lot about what might happen;
  • you have difficulty changing gears;
  • you react angrily or sadly;
  • you would prefer to avoid making changes;
  • requires a lot of preparation;
  • you’re having trouble sleeping because of a new situation;
  • you are finding it difficult to adapt to new routines;

Was this information helpful?

  • you feel tension in your body.
  • Sometimes those around you don’t understand why something so small can have such a big impact. That can be frustrating. Yet the strain on you can be really significant.

    What might be the reason for this?

    Change requires mental energy. If your mind is already full, it becomes harder to adapt. Stress, tiredness, overstimulation and worries can make you less flexible.

    Previous experiences may also play a part. If changes have previously caused a lot of discomfort or uncertainty, your body may react more quickly and be on high alert.

    Furthermore, a lack of information can cause anxiety. If you do not know what to expect, your mind will fill in the gaps itself. This can lead to worrying and unease.

    What can you do yourself?

    It helps to make change more predictable and less daunting.

    For example, you could:

    • write down in advance what is changing;
    • think about what remains the same;
    • ask for information if anything is unclear;
    • making the first step small;
    • plan for extra recovery time in the event of changes;
    • discuss your concerns with someone you trust;
    • maintain a regular routine wherever possible;
    • Be patient if switching takes time.

    Don’t expect this change to feel easy straight away. It may take time to get used to it.

    When is it advisable to seek help?

    It is wise to seek help if change is causing you a great deal of stress or if you find yourself avoiding important situations. It is also a good idea to ask for help if changes are causing you to sleep poorly, experience panic or are preventing you from functioning properly.

    Please also ask for help if changes to your health, work or home life are becoming too much for you. You don’t have to deal with this on your own.

    How Rondom can help

    Together, we’ll look at what makes change difficult and what you need to feel more in control. In doing so, we’ll focus on clarity, energy, motivation, planning and trust.

    A occupational therapist can help to prepare for changes in a practical way and adapt routines. Psychological Support can help with stress, anxiety or worrying about change. A lifestyle coach can support recovery and routine.

    We are looking for steps that make change manageable.
