Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a treatment method that helps you gain insight into the interplay between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Sometimes, fixed patterns of thinking or behaviour can cause symptoms to persist or become more severe. In CBT, you work with your therapist to identify which patterns play a role in this and learn, step by step, to deal with them differently.

CGT focuses on developing new ways of thinking and acting, so that you feel more in control of situations that currently feel difficult or stressful.

When can CBT help?

CGT can help if you find that your thoughts, feelings or behaviour are holding you back in your daily life. The treatment is often used for issues where recurring patterns affect how you feel and how you react.

CGT may, for example, be suitable for:

  • a negative self-image;
  • social anxiety or other anxiety symptoms;
  • feelings of gloom or depression;
  • persistent worrying;
  • uncertainty or perfectionism;
  • stress-related symptoms;
  • difficulty in dealing with challenging situations or changes.
How does CBT work?

Was this information helpful?

During the sessions, you will explore with your therapist how thoughts, feelings and behaviour influence one another. You will learn to recognise which patterns support you and which ones actually hold you back.

With CBT, you will work on, amongst other things:

  • gaining insight into automatic thoughts;
  • to examine whether thoughts are helpful and realistic;
  • practising new ways of thinking;
  • trying out different behaviours step by step;
  • dealing with situations that you may currently be avoiding;
  • applying what you learn in everyday life.

At CGT, we use conversations, exercises and practical tasks tailored to your situation and goals. What you discover during treatment, you practise step by step outside the sessions as well, so that changes are easier to sustain in everyday life.

Together, we will look at which approach best suits your needs and what you require to move forward.
