Validation of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity Index-5

Rondom is participating in research into the reliability of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity Index-5, also known as RADAI-F5. This validation study is being carried out by researchers from the Podiatry Research Group.

Foot problems associated with rheumatoid arthritis

Around 90 per cent of people with rheumatoid arthritis experience foot problems. These symptoms are caused by inflammation in the joints of the foot and the surrounding tissue.

It is important to recognise inflammatory activity in the feet at an early stage. If inflammation persists for a long time, the condition of the feet may deteriorate permanently. This can affect walking, movement and participation in daily activities.

By identifying inflammation earlier and more effectively, we can help ensure appropriate treatment and prevent further damage.

What is the RADAI-F5?

The RADAI-F5 is a questionnaire that measures inflammatory activity in the feet of people with rheumatoid arthritis. The questionnaire consists of five short questions. It provides a quick and reliable way of gauging the level of inflammation.

The original questionnaire was in English. It has since been translated into Dutch. Together with 11 people with rheumatoid arthritis and several experts, the Dutch version has been improved and adapted to our situation.

The questionnaire appears to be suitable for use in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, it is important to carefully assess the questionnaire’s usability. That is why this validation study has been set up.

Aim of the study

In this study, we are investigating whether the Dutch version of the RADAI-F5 is reliable and useful for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

We want to know whether the questionnaire accurately measures what it is intended to measure. Only then can healthcare providers use the results with confidence in their day-to-day practice. In this way, we contribute to care that is carefully substantiated and tailored to your needs.

By working together on this, we are helping to further improve the quality of care for people with rheumatism.

Current status

A number of Rondom’s clients with rheumatoid arthritis have been invited by their podiatrist to take part in the study. The required number of participants has now been reached. The data are currently being analysed.
