Waste medication

For some people, weight-loss medication can provide additional support in achieving a healthier weight. In the Netherlands, certain types of weight-loss medication are reimbursed, subject to certain conditions, in combination with participation in a Combined Lifestyle Intervention (GLI).

The lifestyle coaches at Rondom Leefstijl do not prescribe medication. However, you may be eligible for reimbursement for unused medication if you take part in a GLI programme offered by us. In addition, you must meet certain conditions to be prescribed surplus medication by your doctor.

Medication is not a substitute for lifestyle changes. It is therefore only used to complement the adoption of healthier habits relating to diet, exercise and behaviour.

Please note: this page provides general information. Always read the patient information leaflet for your medication and discuss any questions or concerns with your GP or treating doctor.

  • Which expired medicines are reimbursed?

    At present, subject to certain conditions, two types of waste medication may be reimbursed in conjunction with participation in a Combined Lifestyle Intervention (GLI):

    • Liraglutide (Saxenda or similar brands)
    • Mysimba (naltrexone / bupropion)

    Whether you are eligible for reimbursement depends on your personal circumstances and the terms and conditions of your health insurance. Factors taken into account include your BMI, any health issues you may have, and your participation in a GLI programme.

    Your GP will assess whether the disposal of unwanted medication is appropriate for you.

  • Liraglutide

    Liraglutide is a medicine that can help with weight loss. It is sometimes used in adults who are severely overweight. The medicine can reduce your appetite and make you feel full more quickly.

    Not everyone is eligible for reimbursement for Liraglutide. Certain conditions apply. At present, these include the requirement that you:

    • has participated in a GLI programme for at least one year;
    • does not have type 2 diabetes;
    • has a BMI higher than 40; or
    • has a BMI between 35 and 40, combined with health problems related to their weight. For example, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea or osteoarthritis.

    Your GP will assess whether Liraglutide is suitable for you and can submit an application.

    Whilst taking Liraglutide, the effectiveness of the medicine is assessed. If there is insufficient weight loss after three months, reimbursement for the treatment will cease.

  • Mysimba (naltrexone / bupropion)

    Mysimba is a medicine that can help with weight loss. It is sometimes used in adults who are overweight or obese. The medicine can help reduce appetite and make it easier to manage mealtimes.

    Not everyone is eligible for reimbursement for Mysimba. Certain conditions apply. At present, these include that you:

    • has participated in a GLI programme for at least one year;
    • has a BMI higher than 30; or
    • has a BMI between 27 and 30, combined with health problems related to weight. For example, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea or osteoarthritis.

    Your GP will assess whether Mysimba is suitable for you and can submit an application.

    Whilst using Mysimba, the effectiveness of the medicine is assessed. If there is insufficient weight loss after four months, reimbursement for the treatment will cease.
