Nerve pain between the big toe and the second toe

Compression neuropathy of the deep peroneal nerve is caused by footwear that is too tight or too high, oedema (fluid retention), fractures or a sprained ankle, all of which can damage the nerve. A sprained ankle is the most common cause of this condition.

The big toe and/or the second toe often hurt; sometimes you may also experience sharp pain in the midfoot.

The treatment consists of advice on footwear and/or a modification to your shoes. If your foot position is abnormal, corrective podiatric insoles will be made for you.

The expected outcome is fair to good, depending on the extent of the damage to the nerve tissue. A shoe modification is often required on a long-term basis.
