Fall risk assessment

Falls are more common than you might think. The risk of falling can increase, particularly as you get older.

Do you ever feel unsteady when walking? Or have you fallen or nearly fallen in the past year? If so, you may be at increased risk of falling.

A fall risk assessment enables the podiatrist to assess whether you are at an increased risk of falling. The podiatrist can also use the fall risk assessment to identify ways in which your risk of falling can be reduced.

Abbreviated fall risk assessment

During the podiatry assessment, the podiatrist always carries out a brief fall risk screening for clients aged 65 and over. This test takes a few minutes and consists of:

  • a few questions
  • a walking test
  • a muscle strength test

With this test, the podiatrist assesses whether there is an increased risk of falling.

Has the test shown that your risk of falling is indeed increased? If so, we recommend a comprehensive fall risk assessment. The podiatrist will arrange a new appointment with you for this assessment.

Comprehensive fall risk assessment

During the comprehensive fall risk assessment, the podiatrist will examine what is causing your increased risk of falling. This assessment takes approximately 40 minutes. During the assessment, the podiatrist will look at various points of concern, such as:

  • your mobility
  • your balance
  • your muscle strength
  • your use of medication
  • your eyesight
  • your feet and your shoes

If necessary, the podiatrist will use measuring equipment to get a clear picture of your movement and stability.

Following the assessment, the podiatrist will discuss with you what factors increase your risk of falling. You will receive personalised advice. If necessary, the podiatrist will also suggest a course of treatment.

Treatment for an increased risk of falling

Have you been identified as being at increased risk of falling? If so, we will draw up a suitable treatment plan together with you. Possible components of the treatment include:

  • shoe advice
  • foot exercises
  • podiatric insoles

Podiatric insoles are made to measure. These insoles provide greater support and stability. This helps to improve your balance and reduce symptoms.

Sometimes it is necessary to work with other healthcare providers. For example, with a physiotherapist. In that case, we will refer you to them.

We recommend that you book a follow-up appointment in about two months’ time to see how things are going.

Costs

The costs of an examination or treatment may vary. Reimbursements also depend on your health insurer and your insurance policy. You will therefore find an overview of the rates and general information about reimbursements on our website. This allows you to find out what you need to know in advance. For more information, please see this page.

What are you bringing with you?
