Sports podiatry assessment for cyclists

Do you cycle frequently and experience any symptoms whilst cycling or afterwards? If so, a sports podiatry cycling assessment can help identify the cause of your symptoms.

The cycling assessment is suitable for all cyclists, from recreational riders to elite athletes. You are welcome to come to us even if you have no symptoms – for example, to help prevent injuries.

Sports podiatry cycling assessments often consist of:

  • A personal consultation (medical history);
  • Physical examination (functional examination);
  • Analysis of your posture on the bike;
  • Dynamic cycling analysis;
  • Review of cycling shoes and cleats;
  • Discussing the diagnosis;
  • Drawing up a treatment plan.

Below, we explain each section to you in more detail, step by step.

Rondom Cycling Research
Who is it for?

It is worth noting that the cycling assessment is suitable for cyclists of all levels. After all, anyone who cycles can experience symptoms.

A cycling study is suitable for:

  • Recreational and professional cyclists;
  • Cyclists with injury complaints;
  • Cyclists who want to prevent injuries;
  • Cyclists who want to improve their performance;
  • Other athletes who cycle a lot.
Face-to-face consultation (medical history)

Was this information helpful?

The sports podiatrist begins with a personal consultation. You will discuss, for example:

  • What symptoms you are experiencing;
  • When the symptoms first appear;
  • Whether you have had any previous injuries;
  • The distances you cycle;
  • What your training sessions will look like;
  • Whatever surface you’re cycling on;
  • What your goals are.

During the consultation, we will also discuss your cycling goals, your training workload and any previous injuries.

Physical examination (functional examination)

The consultation is followed by a physical examination. During this examination, the podiatrist will assess the alignment of your feet, ankles, knees, hips and back. We will also assess how well your joints move and how stable they are.

Based on the physical examination, the sports podiatrist will gain a clear understanding of where your symptoms may be coming from.

Analysis of your posture on the bike

An important part of the cycling assessment is examining your posture on the bike. The sports podiatrist observes how your body moves whilst cycling, and how the load is distributed across your feet, knees, hips and back.

By assessing your posture on the bike, we can identify strain and abnormal movements in good time.

Dynamic cycle analysis

After analysing your posture on the bike, the sports podiatrist will carry out a dynamic cycling analysis. For this, your own bike will be placed on a bike trainer.

You’ll start by cycling for a few minutes to warm up. We’ll then carry out a video analysis of your cycling form. After that, we’ll look together at how your body moves whilst cycling. This is the analysis.

This analysis gives the sports podiatrist a clear picture of your gait, posture and any signs of overuse. Based on the analysis, the sports podiatrist can better determine the cause of your symptoms and which treatment is most suitable.

Review of cycling shoes and cleats

Your cycling shoes and cleats will also be assessed. During the assessment, the sports podiatrist will check whether the shoes fit your feet properly. They will also check whether the position of the cleats is suited to your posture and pedalling motion.

An assessment of cycling shoes and cleats is important. This is because even a slight deviation in the position of the shoe or cleat can affect the entire kinetic chain. Where necessary, we provide advice on shoe adjustments, cleat adjustments or suitable sports podiatry insoles.

Based on the assessment, the sports podiatrist can provide targeted advice on adjustments to your bike. This will enable us to improve your posture and reduce strain, and help prevent any symptoms.

Additional podiatric assessment

Do you experience any discomfort whilst cycling, or do you require further treatment? If so, the sports podiatrist may recommend a further podiatric assessment.

During the supplementary podiatry assessment, we carry out additional physical tests. During this assessment, the (sports) podiatrist will, at the very least, examine:

  • The position of your feet;
  • The mobility of your ankles, knees and hips;
  • Your body’s stability;
  • The impact of certain movements or postural deviations on your posture and pedalling action whilst cycling.

Based on the supplementary podiatric examination, the sports podiatrist will gain an even clearer picture of the cause of your symptoms whilst cycling.

The diagnosis

Following the assessment, the sports podiatrist will discuss the findings with you. We will explain the likely causes of your symptoms and what the issue is.

In doing so, we look not only at the current complaint, but also at how we can help prevent new complaints from arising.

The treatment plan

The sports podiatrist will draw up a treatment plan together with you. The treatment plan is tailored to your symptoms, your cycling position and your training goals.

Possible components of the treatment include:

  • Footwear advice;
  • Foot orthotics;
  • Adjusting the cleats;
  • Sports podiatry insoles for cycling shoes;
  • Possibly a standard podiatric insole for everyday shoes;
  • Advice on exercise load and training programmes.

Where necessary, we work together with other healthcare professionals, such as a physiotherapist or sports doctor.

Follow-up appointment

During follow-up appointments, the sports podiatrist will discuss with you how you are getting on and whether the treatment is helping. If necessary, we will adjust the treatment.

This is how we work together to ensure cycling remains an enjoyable and injury-free activity.

Please note the following

For the sports podiatry cycling assessment, it is important that you bring your own equipment. Therefore, please always bring the following:

  • Your own bike;
  • Your cycling shoes;
  • Your cycling kit;
  • Your podiatrist-prescribed insoles, if you have them.

The assessment will take place whilst you are riding your own bicycle. This is the only way the sports podiatrist can properly assess your posture, pedalling motion and the strain on your body.
