Wear and tear only

Osteoarthritis of the ankle joint is a condition affecting the joint which is not caused by inflammation or degenerative changes.

What is it?

Osteoarthritis of the ankle joint is a condition affecting the joint that is not caused by inflammation or degenerative changes.

The symptoms

The symptoms experienced include stiffness on waking and in the morning, particularly after a period of rest; these symptoms can occur in any joint and disappear with movement. Osteoarthritis can affect the joint, restricting certain movements. The joint may also be swollen due to mild inflammation. This is because more fluid accumulates in the joint. Your joint may also feel thicker due to bony spurs.

A treatment

The treatment involves supporting the normal foot roll so that the ankle joint is no longer restricted; a heel lift can be fitted into the shoe for this purpose. In addition, a compensatory gait pattern (such as inward rolling of the foot) often develops, which can cause other symptoms and places incorrect strain on the other foot joints. A compensatory gait pattern is an indication for corrective podiatric insoles. ALWAYS combine podiatry with physiotherapy and/or manual therapy.

The expected outcome is that osteoarthritis is a permanent condition, but that a reasonable to good reduction in pain symptoms can be achieved.
