Painful second metatarsal in children

This condition mainly affects children. It involves bone necrosis at the level of the second metatarsal bone.

There is pain at the head of the metatarsal bone. An appointment with the podiatrist must be made immediately.

The treatment involves relieving pressure (using felt or a bandage), after which corrective, pressure-relieving podiatric insoles are made to immobilise the affected joint as much as possible. If symptoms persist, a plaster cast may be recommended.

The expected outcome is good, depending on the duration of the necrosis. Recovery usually begins after approximately 2 months. Full recovery will take place after 2–3 years following acute intervention.
