Pain on the underside of the big toe

This refers to pain under the sole of the foot at the level of the big toe joint. This is where two small bones are located which can cause pain as a result of overuse. This is often seen in sports such as ballet.

If you experience symptoms, particularly following an extension injury to the ankle and toes, it is advisable to see a podiatrist. Only after an X-ray can it be determined whether there is a fracture of the sesamoid bone or whether sesamoiditis is present. Symptoms may include pain under the head of the first metatarsal bone when weight is borne on it, and walking on the toes may be impossible.

A podiatric insole will be made to completely relieve pressure on the sesamoid bones, and/or taping will be applied. In the event of severe symptoms, the temporary use of crutches is indicated

The expected outcome is freedom from symptoms. If the results are unsatisfactory, surgery is recommended.
