Pain in the forefoot (metatarsalgia)

Metatarsalgia is a collective term for pain in the forefoot. It is sometimes referred to as a ‘sagging forefoot’. It mainly involves pain under the forefoot when weight is borne on it. In such cases, it is also advisable to see a podiatrist.

The aim is to address the underlying cause. This is often linked to foot position and poor foot roll (due to poor muscle function or reduced mobility). A corrective podiatric insole will be fitted, or in the case of partial dislocation, taping will be applied, or (silicone) orthoses will be used. However, exercises may also be prescribed to improve muscle function. In addition, advice on footwear may be provided. The expected outcome is a full recovery.
