Overlapping toes

This is also known as: supra- or infraduction of the toes. In the case of supra- or infraduction of the toes, the toes overlap one another. This condition is often congenital or genetically determined.

It is particularly painful when calluses form and vertical pressure is applied to them. Most people also frequently experience problems with their shoes. Children are less likely to suffer from this condition.

If the toes can move sufficiently, a corrective orthosis can be made to improve the alignment of the toes.

If the toes cannot move sufficiently, a protective orthosis can be made to relieve the painful pressure points.

If foot function is also a factor, a podiatric insole can be made.

The expected outcome is moderate to good in terms of symptoms. The position of the toes usually remains abnormal. The (silicone) orthosis will probably need to be worn permanently. In children, however, a permanent correction can often be achieved; this depends on the severity of the abnormality and the timing of referral.

If symptoms persist and there is severe stiffness of the joint, surgery is recommended.
