Outward tilt of the heel bone

This often occurs in conjunction with a change in the position of the foot and leg.

What is it?

This is also known as a varus deformity. It refers to the heel bone (calcaneus) tilting too far outwards. Foot alignment often depends on the characteristics of bones, muscles and ligaments and is therefore usually genetically determined. A varus tilt in the foot can also have consequences further up the limb, such as at the knee and hip, as it restricts the normal rolling motion of the foot.

Symptoms often vary, frequently affecting the outside of the foot, ankle, knee or hip, but sometimes the inside instead. Symptoms usually arise when walking or exercising.

A treatment

Foot problems can be corrected with podiatric insoles. In addition, advice on footwear can be given and, in some cases, exercises may be recommended.

The expected outcome is ‘good’ to ‘symptom-free’. The improvement in posture achieved is usually not permanent once the podiatric insoles are no longer worn (in children, complete correction is sometimes possible, depending on the cause).
