Biomechanical research (gait analysis)

A biomechanical assessment is an assessment in which the podiatrist examines the way you stand and walk.

Using video recordings and measurements, we analyse how your feet and body move whilst walking. We examine both how you stand still and how you walk. This gives the podiatrist a clear picture of your posture and gait.

Why a biomechanical study?

Some symptoms have a cause that is not immediately apparent. The place where you feel pain is not always the place where the symptom originates.

Complaints can, for example, arise from an abnormal position of the feet. Or a different way of moving. A biomechanical assessment allows us to gain a clear understanding of this.

During the examination, we look at how your body moves and where the movement differs from normal. This helps us determine whether the way you move is affecting your symptoms.

Based on the biomechanical assessment, we select a treatment that suits your situation. In this way, we work specifically to reduce symptoms and prevent new ones from arising.

Was this information helpful?

During the biomechanical assessment, the podiatrist examines various aspects of your posture and movement. The podiatrist will look at the following during the assessment:

  • Pressure points under your feet;
  • The distribution of these pressure points;
  • The movement of your foot whilst walking;
  • Your way of moving;
  • The position of your legs;
  • Any differences in leg length;
  • Other characteristics.
Pressure measurement analysis

During the biomechanical assessment, we often use a pressure measurement plate. The podiatrist uses the pressure measurement plate to assess how pressure is distributed under your feet whilst standing and walking.

When you walk across the plate, this is displayed on a screen. This allows the podiatrist to see where there is a lot of pressure and where there is little. The podiatrist can also use the pressure measurement plate to see how your foot rolls as you walk.

These measurements give the podiatrist further insight into your gait and stability. This helps to better understand the possible causes of your symptoms and which treatment is best suited to you.
