Damaged nail

You may notice that your toenail is sensitive, painful or has turned a dark colour after exercising, walking or bumping your toe. Sometimes the nail feels thick or there is pressure under the nail. The nail may also become partially detached.

A damaged toenail is often caused by a knock or by prolonged pressure on the toes. For example, this can be caused by sport or shoes that are too tight. The symptoms can be troublesome when walking, playing sport or wearing shoes.

Damaged nail.
What is it?

A damaged nail is also known as nail trauma. This occurs when the toenail is damaged by a blow or prolonged pressure on the toe.

The damage may cause the nail to discolour, become sensitive or come away. Sometimes pressure or a bruise may also develop under the nail.

Causes

Was this information helpful?

A damaged toenail is usually caused by a knock or prolonged pressure on the toe or toenail.

Other factors can also contribute to the onset of symptoms, such as:

  • shoes that are too tight;
  • prolonged pressure on the feet during exercise;
  • repeated jabbing of the toes;
  • a lot of pressure on the forefoot whilst walking or moving.
What do you notice?

If you have a damaged nail, you may notice that:

  • the nail turns blue or dark;
  • if the nail is sensitive or painful;
  • the nail comes away partially;
  • walking or wearing shoes becomes a nuisance.
The impact of a healthy lifestyle and your mental health

A healthy lifestyle helps the skin and nails to recover better after damage. Wearing the right shoes helps to reduce pressure on the nail. Getting enough rest is also important for recovery.

It is important to temporarily reduce the pressure on your toe, but do keep moving within the limits of what feels comfortable. If you carry on walking whilst experiencing pain or pressure on the toenail, the symptoms may persist for longer.

Our lifestyle coaches can help with healthy habits and a good balance between exercise and recovery.

What can you do yourself?

There is a lot you can do yourself to prevent further damage to the nail.

To reduce symptoms, you can:

  • wear shoes with enough room for your toes;
  • avoid putting pressure on the nail as much as possible;
  • handle the damaged nail with care;
  • temporarily adjust your exercise routine if this causes pain;
  • to prevent you from stubbing your toe again.
Advice and treatment

Our pedicures can treat and protect the damaged nail. The treatment is aimed at reducing the pressure on the nail and alleviating symptoms.

Treatment may consist of:

  • caring for and protecting the nail;
  • reducing pressure on the nail;
  • advice on choosing shoes;
  • advice on toe and nail care;
  • support with nail recovery.

Are your symptoms recurring? If so, our podiatrists investigate what is causing constant pressure on the toenail. Together, we will look for a suitable solution.
