Amputation of the foot or toe due to diabetes

An amputation takes place when you have had a wound that has not healed properly. You will be referred as soon as the surgical wound allows.

Complications that may arise following an amputation
  • reduced stability of the foot in question;
  • reduced sensation in the toes;
  • pressure at the underside of the ball of the foot near the amputated toes;
  • excessive callus formation on the ball of the foot;
  • change in the position of the adjacent toes.
Chopart’s and/or Lisfranc’s joint amputation

In the case of an amputation at the Chopart/Lisfranc joint, part of the foot is surgically removed. Treatment by a podiatrist consists of a podiatry insole which aims to correct the position of the foot where necessary and to fill the gap left by the missing part of the foot inside the shoe.

What can a podiatrist do for you?

Following an amputation, the podiatrist can help you to improve mobility in the affected foot, prevent changes in the alignment of the adjacent toes, and prevent pressure sores and wounds under the balls of the feet.

Treatment by a podiatrist following an amputation
  • reducing the excess pressure under the ball of the foot by means of a podiatric insole
  • the removal of the enlarged callusesformation, where present
  • the prevention of changes in the position of the adjacent toes by means of fitting a orthosis (short piece)
  • increasing the range of motion and stability in the affected foot by means of a podiatric insole and/or shoe advice
  • providing advice on foot care
