Toe amputation (post-amputation status)

You will be referred to a podiatrist as soon as the surgical wound has healed sufficiently. The symptoms you may experience following a toe amputation are:

\- reduced stability in the affected foot

\- reduced mobility of the toes adjacent to the amputated toes

\- excessive pressure under the ball of the foot in the areas where the toes have been amputated.

\- change in the position of the other toes

The treatment involves reducing the pressure beneath the ball of the foot, preventing the remaining toes from changing position, and improving the mobility and stability of the foot. This can be achieved by making podiatric insoles, toe orthoses and providing advice on footwear.

The expected outcome depends on the condition of the tissue (skin, muscles, bones, joints, nerves, blood vessels) of the foot and the reason for the amputation. If medical conditions are the cause, these will influence recovery and the outcome of treatment. In general, the results are reasonable to good.
