Relaxation problems

Do you find it difficult to relax, even when you have time? Perhaps your mind keeps racing, your body feels restless, or you just can’t seem to really enjoy yourself. You sit down, but your mind keeps working. That can be tiring and prevent you from recovering properly.

Relaxation is important for both body and mind. It helps to release tension and replenish energy. If you are unable to relax, your system remains active. This can lead to an increase in stress-related symptoms, sleep problems, pain and tiredness.

What do you notice?

Problems with relaxation can manifest themselves in various ways.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you find it difficult to sit still;
  • you worry a lot;
  • you have tense muscles;
  • you sleep restlessly;
  • you quickly reach for your phone;
  • fill your free time with plants;
  • you feel guilty if you do nothing;
  • you find little pleasure in it;
  • You only stop when you are completely exhausted.

Sometimes you’re not quite sure what relaxation means to you anymore. Things that used to be enjoyable may now feel like an extra effort.

What might be the reason for this?

Difficulties relaxing are often caused by prolonged stress, a heavy workload or a lack of time to recover. If your body remains in ‘action mode’ for a long time, it does not simply switch back to normal.

Habits can also play a part. Too much screen time, always being on call, working late or getting little exercise can make it harder to relax.

In addition, pain, tiredness, anxiety or low mood can make resting feel unpleasant. You want to relax, but your body or mind won’t let you.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to make relaxation small and specific. You don’t have to become completely calm straight away.

For example, you could:

  • plan a short break every day;
  • a leisurely walk;
  • try some breathing exercises;
  • put the screens away sooner;
  • listening to music;
  • doing something with your hands, such as gardening or a creative activity;
  • seek out warmth or a peaceful environment;
  • spread relaxation throughout the day.

Do choose whatever suits you best. Relaxation doesn’t have to mean being still. For some people, gentle exercise works better than sitting on the sofa.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is advisable to seek help if you hardly ever relax or if anxiety is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or daily tasks. It is also a good idea to get in touch if you are experiencing panic, low mood or severe anxiety.

Please also ask for help if you no longer know how to relax or if relaxation makes you feel guilty.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at what makes it difficult for you to relax. In doing so, we’ll focus on stress, sleep, energy, stimuli, habits and recovery.

A lifestyle coach can help to make relaxation, exercise and moments of rest a regular part of your routine. A occupational therapist can help you find a balance between stress and recovery. If you are experiencing worry, anxiety or mental pressure, you can psychological support should be appropriate. A physiotherapist can help if muscle tension and movement are factors.

We are looking for ways to make relaxation feel achievable and appropriate again.
